So, five weeks have gone by and my summer job at Engagor came to an end. And because of this I thought it might be a good time to summarize all the things I’ve learned in the past few weeks:

  • GIT / Github: GIT is, and I quote Wikipedia,  a distributed revision control and source code management system. I’ve had experience with version control projects, but I had never really used GIT. Mainly because for my school projects we were obligated to use the control system they choose. At first I was kind of like i have no idea what I’m doing. But now I get why everyone is using this.
  • PHP: Before I applied for this job I had never done anything in PHP. So when they told me I had the job and my exams were finished I did some tutorials and tried creating some basic stuff. I still learn new things everyday and I’m still a long way from being an expert, but it’s working out real good.
  • Working on a existing project: I never had to do this. It’s totally different than just start from the beginning. Mainly because if you’ve done it all yourself, you know where and how things are happening. I find that it’s challenging, I don’t want to screw up.
  • Not knowing everything: I already knew that I still have a lot to learn, but I find myself realizing this more and more. Sometimes I don’t like this realization. (Who would?). So I’m learning every day, by taking baby steps, that I can’t know everything and that it’s okay to ask questions.

I’ve learned a lot more, but that is stuff for another post.

Oh, one more thing: the summer job translated in a ‘real’ job. So you’ll be reading a lot more about my adventures at Engagor!

For two weeks now, I’ve been working as a junior web developer at Engagor. Engagor, a startup founded in 2011, helps you manage social media. Not only can you easily monitor almost every social happening on the web, but you can also measure your own online performance and recieve insights about everything that could be interesting to you. If you, or your company, want to know more about Engagor, I suggest you signup a free trial so you can see for yourself how awesome Engagor is. I assure you it’s really amazing!

I’m still a student, so everything I do at Engagor is quite new and it’s amazing how much I’ve learned in the past two weeks. Before I applied for this job I had never done anything in PHP so not only do I have to learn a new programming language but I also have to do it right. No weird stuff to make things work, no get things done the way it should be. So everyday I go to work, I’m really happy I got this chance to be part of this amazing product and I really feel awesome to even make a small change in it.

The nerd in me has never been happier!
